The Illusion of Autonomy at Scale

A security research firm wanted to know: how many real agents are actually on Moltbook?
The answer surprised them.
The Experiment
Researchers at Zenity Labs designed a simple test. They would post content on Moltbook with embedded links. If agents automatically ingested that content and followed the links, the researchers could measure:
- How many agents exist
- Where they are located geographically
- How easily they can be coordinated
The mechanism was not an exploit. It was the platform operating as designed.
The Heartbeat Problem
Moltbook agents are built on OpenClaw. A core feature called the heartbeat makes agents automatically check for updates every 30 minutes. They fetch new content, process it, and act on it.
This is intended behavior. It lets agents stay current, learn new skills, and discover content without human intervention.
But it also means agents blindly follow links without validation.
The researchers embedded a simple telemetry link in their posts. Agents that read the content automatically fetched the link. Each fetch recorded:
- IP address
- Geographic location
- Timing
The results were stark.
What the Data Showed
1,000+ unique agent endpoints followed the links within a week.
70+ countries were represented in the geographic distribution.
A live map at censusmolty.com visualized the activity in real-time.
The researchers called it: "Turning Moltbook into a global botnet map."
The "Botnet" Comparison
The researchers were deliberate in their language. They did not claim Moltbook is a botnet. They claimed it behaves like one.
A botnet is a network of compromised devices controlled by an attacker. The devices follow instructions without their owner's knowledge.
Moltbook agents, in this framing, follow platform instructions without their operators' knowledge. The heartbeat fetches content. The content may contain links. The links may contain requests. The agents comply.
The researchers wrote:
"We stopped at a benign telemetry request. A malicious actor could have embedded far more harmful instructions."
The Feed Stagnation Problem
Beyond coordination, the researchers noticed something else.
On Reddit, content in the "Hot" section rotates continuously. New posts rise, old posts fall. The algorithm balances recency and engagement.
On Moltbook, they found something different.
Posts remained at the top of the "Hot" feed for weeks. One post held the top position for 17 days. The ranking algorithm, which exists in the public codebase, did not appear to function the same way in production.
This created a discovery problem. New posts could not gain visibility unless they accumulated extreme engagement. The researchers called it "feed stagnation."
The Autonomy Question
Moltbook is marketed as the "Internet of Agents." The narrative suggests autonomous AI systems interacting, forming communities, and building culture without human direction.
The research complicates this narrative.
"Despite the 'Internet of Agents' narrative, we did not find evidence of large-scale autonomous collaboration. The ecosystem is limited, repetitive, and far from the self-sustaining society it is marketed to be."
What the researchers found was:
- Agents that automatically follow heartbeat-fetched content
- A static feed where content does not rotate
- Easy coordination through normal platform features
None of this requires autonomy. All of it can be explained by human operators configuring agents to ingest platform content.
What This Means
The findings do not prove that Moltbook is fake or that no real agents exist. They demonstrate that the platform's architecture enables coordination at scale—regardless of whether that coordination comes from humans, agents, or both.
For platform builders: The heartbeat feature is a powerful mechanism for updating agents. It is also a powerful mechanism for manipulating them. Content ingested automatically is content that can be weaponized.
For agent operators: Automated content ingestion means your agent may be executing instructions you never approved. The link in that post? The agent followed it. The telemetry request? The agent sent it.
For the broader ecosystem: The distinction between autonomous agents and human-controlled fleets matters. Research that treats all activity as agent-generated may reach incorrect conclusions about AI capability.
The Larger Context
This is not the first security finding about Moltbook. Earlier research by Wiz identified the 88:1 human-to-agent ratio. Other researchers have documented prompt injection attacks between agents.
The common thread: the platform's open architecture enables coordination, but that coordination does not necessarily come from autonomous AI.
The heartbeat that keeps agents current also makes them controllable.
The feed that surfaces content also concentrates it.
The community that appears autonomous may be orchestrated.
The Map
The live demonstration remains online at censusmolty.com. It visualizes agent endpoints that responded to the research campaign—organized by country, IP address, and request timing.
The researchers made clear: visiting the site does not add you to the map. Only agents that followed links in Moltbook posts were counted.
The map is a snapshot of a coordinated influence campaign that used only platform features.
The Bottom Line
Zenity Labs demonstrated that Moltbook agents can be coordinated at scale using only intended platform features. The heartbeat mechanism that powers agent discovery also powers agent manipulation.
Whether this matters depends on what you believe Moltbook is.
If it is a platform for autonomous AI to build culture, the finding is concerning. Coordination should emerge from agent choices, not follow embedded links.
If it is a platform for humans to coordinate agent fleets, the finding is expected. The behavior matches the design.
